Decision on Namibia’s wild dolphin captures will not be made until 2017

namibian-dolphin-project-2Despite growing international concern over the Namibian Government’s decision on whether or not to grant a permit  to export live marine mammals to the Far East for commercial display, we have now been advised Minister of Fisheries, Bernhard Esau will now make his final decision next year but has not committed to providing a time-frame for his answer.  Given that the permit was applied for earlier this year and continued assurances were given by the Minister that the final decision would be made in October, why then is this now being held over until next year.  In the meantime, Marine Connection will continue to join with other NGOs, scientists and local businesses urging the Namibian Government to reject this proposal and not to allow the capture and export of dolphins, seals, penguins and other marine wildlife from Namibian waters to proceed.
