Maui's dolphin close up (c) NZ GovtAt last, there is hope for this species as New Zealand’s Labour Party under the new Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern plus NZ First and the NZ Green Party all back a ban on commercial fishing activities within the areas frequented by Maui and Hector’s dolphins.

They are also considering other measures to ensure their protection, including banning mining, bringing some hope for these cetaceans whose population has suffered greatly from the impacts of fishing net entanglement.
