South Korea steps up action on illegal whaling

minke whale (c)RonileIllegal whalers are using South Korea’s eastern coastal regions to the Yellow Sea – name given to the northern part of the East China Sea – to hunt migrating whales.  The dead marine mammals are hidden within the ships and then smuggled into various ports. To crack down on this, the coast guard is now increasing ship inspections upon leaving and entering the ports. If found with whales on board, the illegal whalers can face up to three years in prison.
