In 2008, Marine Connection launched its first ‘Lone Rangers’ report, historically documenting solitary cetaceans around the world.
The new, updated Second Edition has just been released and covers solitaries from the 1950s to date. At time of publishing (July 2019), there have been 114 cases recorded worldwide with bottlenose dolphins being the most commonly found solitary cetacean, however there have been cases of other species from common dolphins to orcas and beluga whales.
Whether solitary cetaceans are on the increase, or it is indeed a case of more effective reporting is difficult to assess, however, what is clear is our growing fascination with these animals when they appear around coastlines and with this, a growing need to ensure their protection.
