A male humpback has set a record for the longest migration between feeding and breeding grounds in different oceans — travelling more than 13,000 kilometres between South America and Africa. In 2013, the male humpback was spotted in the Gulf of Tribugá in the Pacific Ocean off Columbia, in 2017, he was sighted again, less than 80km away. Both times, he was travelling with other whales and in August 2022, the same whale was spotted in the Zanzibar Channel.
What drove this male humpback to make such an incredible journey? It’s possible that he was compelled to search for a mate, but we may never really know the answer – until this whale is spotted again, his exact whereabouts are currently unknown.
