Disturbance threatening Malta’s wild dolphin population

By July 28, 2026No Comments

Marine Connection is supporting calls for stronger enforcement against dolphin harassment by recreational vessels in Malta. Together with EcoMarine Malta and various other organisations, we are calling for stronger protections through lower boat speeds, mandatory operator training, stricter enforcement of wildlife laws, compulsory wildlife protection briefings for jet ski users, marine conservation education as part of nautical licensing, and a national cetacean reporting system.

In April 2026, multiple jet skis were observed chasing and disturbing a pod of 15–20 dolphins feeding near fish farms. The incident was reported to the relevant authorities, together with video evidence, yet meaningful enforcement action has yet to be taken. We will continue working with EcoMarine Malta to ensure the resident dolphins receive the protection they need before further harm occurs.
