Cetacean Bycatch in New Zealand waters

A new report from New Zealand’s Department of Conservation shows dolphins and whales need more protection from deadly fishing gear, even in areas designed to protect the marine mammals from such impacts.

July 2022 through June 2023 saw 109 deaths, including common, dusky and Hector’s dolphins and an orca. All victims of the fishing industry and the reported deaths are just the tip of the iceberg.
