Orca Month was started in 2006 by long-time colleagues of Marine Connection at Orca Network, to raise awareness and bring together researchers, advocates and orca lovers everywhere.
Now in its 13th year, Orca Month events span the three states of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, focusing once again on the plight of the southern resident killer whales (SRKW) and the desperate need to help them recover to a healthy population. Throughout June many organizations will be hosting a variety of events to educate the public about the SRKW population and the challenges they face, including reduced numbers of Chinook salmon numbers (the orcas’ main food source.) The southern residents rely totally on fish for their survival, No fish – No Blackfish.
Join Marine Connection in celebrating Orca Month – a time for everyone to show appreciation for these intelligent, social, and simply awe-inspiring orcas because the survival of each and every animal is vital for this critically endangered community’s future.
