Following strong public interest, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) has published a series of documents outlining its response to the orca calf stranding near Plimmerton, north of Wellington, New Zealand in July this year.

The young unweaned orca calf named ‘Toa’ was cared for by volunteers and by veterinarians for 12 days while attempts were made to locate its pod. Sadly, the calf died before its pod could be found.

This link documents what happened over the days when the rescue/monitoring team had to make difficult decisions against backdrops of winter weather and a very high level of media, public and scientific interest.
