It’s not Fungie the Dingle dolphin

Having seen reports over the weekend that the dolphin known internationally as Fungie had been spotted off the Kinsale coast of Ireland, we doubted that the dolphin in question was the same majestic male dolphin that had lived in Dingle Bay for over 37 years, before simply disappearing in late 2020.

Upon further investigation, we can confirm it the dolphin is not Fungie, but another solitary dolphin that is frequenting the waters around Old Head of Kinsale, County Cork interacting with vessels in the area. Marine Connection believes it is in fact the same lone dolphin that the charity monitored off the UK coast over several months last year, and are now undertaking further work to confirm the identity of the dolphin and whether it is indeed the male dolphin that we believe it to be.

Marine Connection has been monitoring and documenting solitary dolphins and whales for many years – read more about our social/solitary cetacean work and what we do to protect these individual marine mammals wherever they appear around the world.
