Japan to set its own whaling quotas

By February 1, 2019No Comments

japanJapan is set to enforce its own quotas when they recommence commercial whaling in July of this year following the country’s official exit from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) on June 30.

Annual caps will be set for different areas of the sea, whale species and on the types of ships used for whaling – the first time that Japan will set its own legal quotas for whaling which will be allowed all year round until the quotas are met.

The Fisheries Agency will be seeking public comment before announcing changes to a government ordinance governing whaling in mid-March.
