Mediterraneo blames support diver for dolphin deaths

Mediterraneo Malta, captivity, dolphin deaths, bottlenose dolphins, truth, Marine Connection

Further to our report on August 8 on the death of three captive dolphins at Mediterraneo, Malta an article in the Times of Malta quotes Pietro Pecchioni, Supervising Manager at the facility as stating that the incident did occur in Summer 2021 when a weight bag was presumably left unattended by a support diver who was in charge of cleaning the tanks fell into the water. Mr Peccioni then goes on to state that weight bags are forbidden at the park.

Margaux Dodds, captivity director for Marine Connection comments “If this were truly a tragic accident, why did the park, when initially approached about the disappearance of these dolphins, deliberately provide a totally inaccurate account of the whereabouts of the animals.  Furthermore, are they now saying that this support diver, not employed directly by the park, was allowed to work unobserved in the pool area with the dolphins present, and with equipment which, by Mr Pecchioni’s own admission, is forbidden to be used within the park?”  There are still many unanswered questions surrounding the death and disposal of the bodies of these animals, all of which, we will continue to demand be answered.
