Marine Connection co-founder Liz Sandeman recently unveiled a beautiful memorial to a solitary male bottlenose dolphin known as Danny who frequented Dorset waters for some years before losing his life in October 2020 due to an accidental vessel strike. The memorial is unique, being the first of its kind anywhere in the world.
The male dolphin initially appeared around the Cornish coastline in 2017 and after some time was named Splashy by locals. A year later he travelled along the coast, appearing in waters around Dorset, where the locals there named him Danny. It was not until after comparing pectoral fin ID at a later date that we were able to confirm that Splashy and Danny were indeed one and the same dolphin.
It is very moving to see a dolphin being remembered in this way and the memorial will remain as a lasting tribute to a young dolphin who won the hearts of many during his short lifetime.
