Marine Connection welcomed the recent announcement from the Spanish Government that they are to create a new reserve for the migration of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea. The protected area will cover 46,385 square kilometres (17,909 square miles) between the Balearic Islands and the mainland and will hopefully prohibit companies searching for fossil fuels ( crude oil, coal and gas) in the area.
The species sighted in the area, either around all year or migrating include fin whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, Cuvier’s beaked whales, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, common dolphins and loggerhead turtles.
