In recent months off the coast of Galicia, northwest Spain, multiple sailing yachts (with a length equal to or less than 15 meters) have been damaged by killer whales ramming their hulls. Two vessels which were attacked by the whales on different days were left with damaged rudders and forced to request a tow back to the port of Cedeira. More than 25 attacks have been catalogued by Spanish authorities between Gibraltar and Galicia and although the incidents are exceptionally rare, so far the whales’ motives are unclear – leaving scientists and cetacean organisations baffled.
In an attempt to protect both sailors and the killer whales, the Spanish Government has decided to take action and as a first step, is limiting sailing in the area by putting in place a no-sailing zone for medium-sized sailing vessels.
