New evidence suggests that North Korea is training dolphins for military purposes in a carbon-copy of America’s Navy programme.
Comparisons to the marine mammal pens used by the U.S. Navy and Russian Navy suggest that the North Korean pens, spotted at a naval base in Nampo, on the west coast of the country, are sized for dolphins. The United States Naval Institute, which has close links with the US Navy, said satellite imagery obtained of the secretive totalitarian state appeared to show animal pens, sized for dolphins, in waters off the west coast port city of Nampo. Another potential site was recorded further up a river on the outskirts of Nampo, which may be where the dolphins are bred.
The program is likely part of the widespread modernization of the navy that has taken place under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. If confirmed, North Korea would join the US and Russia as the only countries known to be engaged in the training of marine mammals for purposes of warfare.
