Protecting Antarctica’s fragile marine life

We are delighted to report that from April 2026, Holland & Barrett will no longer source or sell krill-based products. Why? Because krill fishing harms whales, penguins, seals, and the delicate Southern Ocean ecosystem.

The company will instead guide customers towards sustainable omega-3 alternatives that offer the same benefits without threatening Antarctic wildlife, such as the humpback whale, which must compete with mighty super-trawlers in the Southern Ocean. This fishing effort is often concentrated in the same hotspots where whales and other marine life feed, leading to potential food scarcity. The presence of krill fishing trawlers in these areas also poses a direct physical threat, as whales become entangled in the large nets, sometimes fatally. Human activities are disrupting the fragile balance of the Southern Ocean ecosystem and putting the recovery of whale populations at risk. By choosing not to purchase krill-based products, consumers can make an ethical choice that benefits marine wildlife and helps protect our oceans.
