Renewable energy versus protecting whales – a fine balance

Marine Connection is an active member of Stop Sea Blasts campaign that raises public awareness about dolphins, whales, and other marine life being injured/killed by the detonation of unexploded bombs found in British waters from the First and Second World Wars.

In November 2021, as part of a wider event in London, a 120,000-signature petition was handed into Downing Street supporting less harmful disposal of munitions and earlier this week, Dame Joanna Lumley who fronts the campaign was joined by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, George Eustice at a quarry in Somerset to watch a series of explosions to highlight the damage they can cause at sea to dolphins and whales. After one explosion, dozens of pilot whales were found beached on the north coast of Scotland.

At the quarry, the explosive demo of a traditional bomb detonation was compared with the quieter approach of deflagration in which a small charge is used to burn the bomb out – a study published last year by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy found deflagration to be hundreds of times quieter than regular detonation.  The Stop Sea Blasts campaign will continue pushing the UK Government to mandate the use of quieter deflagration.
