The World Whale Film Festival celebrates whales around the globe through powerful short films that spark ocean awareness and inspire action for a better, bluer future. Bringing together filmmakers from across the world, the festival showcases compelling storytelling that highlights the beauty of whales and the urgent need to protect them.

Marine Connection was delighted that Captive was selected for the 2026 Maui-based festival, held earlier this week.

The documentary explores the ethical issues surrounding orcas in captivity, examining the UK’s history, and sharing the stories of Wikie and Keijo — the last two orcas from the now-closed Marineland Antibes, who remain in captivity in France. The first part of Captive is now complete, with the second instalment coming soon.

Marine Connection collaborated with natural history filmmaker and photographer Ben Gibson to bring this important story to life.
