We now have an update on the passing of the female orca Skyla, who recently died at Loro Parque, Tenerife, Spain.
The facility’s post about the post-mortem which was conducted by pathologists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, reports the cause of death was due to intestinal torsion resulting in acute septicemia, a serious bloodstream infection. Although intestinal torsion can happen in healthy animals and would have been inoperable, Skyla having contracted septicemia would have been showing signs of suffering for several days prior to death, therefore to describe her death as immediate following the onset of septicemia is misleading.
Six orcas now remain at Loro Parque – three females and three males.
