Marine Connection is deeply saddened to report the death of yet another known solitary/social bottlenose dolphin due to a vessel strike. On 12 September, a dolphin was reported floating on the water at the entrance to Cork Harbour near Roches Point. The animal was recovered and sadly showed signs of injuries consistent with propeller damage. Photos provided the evidence required, based on the distinctive scar on his beak and the unique markings on his dorsal fin, to confirm that this was the solitary male dolphin known as ‘Nick’, which had also recently been sighted in the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall.
