World Animal Day brings together the animal welfare movement, uniting people around the globe in a shared commitment to making the world a kinder, better place for all animals, and this year’s official theme is: “See the World Through Their Eyes.”
We make choices every day – but what happens when we pause and try to see the world from another perspective? When we truly begin to see the world through the eyes of captive dolphins and whales, we begin to imagine a very different life. A life without the freedom to choose where to go or without the constant discovery of new places and surroundings. To understand their world is to consider what life means to them – remarkably repetitive days, the same enclosure, the same boundaries, the same routines, day after day. Imagine waking each morning to the same walls, swimming the same circles, seeing the same view, knowing that tomorrow will be much the same.
When we truly try to see the world through their eyes, our choices begin to change, because compassion begins when we take the time to imagine what life feels like for someone else.
