Shedd Aquarium has shared preliminary medical findings from the post-mortem necropsy investigations into the deaths of beluga whales Peekachu and Rain, who had been relocated from Marineland in Canada, and Beethoven, a longtime resident of the aquarium.
Organ samples indicated that 23-year-old Peekachu and 20-year-old Rain had chronic inflammatory disease affecting their gastrointestinal systems. The inflammation was described as significant in Peekachu and severe in Rain. Beethoven, who was 34 years old, showed several health changes associated with ageing, including changes affecting his cardiovascular system.
