In January this year, Marine Connection wrote to Jamaican Prime Minister, Andrew Holness adding our support to concerns already raised locally by marine scientists of the University of The West Indies Marine Lab, The Discovery Bay Community Development Committee, The Fishermen’s Cooperative of Discovery Bay and our colleagues at Jamaica Environment Trust (JET).
We objected to the construction of Dolphin Cove (Dolphin Discovery’s fifth location in Jamaica), as not only was this yet another captive dolphin facility being established on the island, but the area in which it is located is a designated fish sanctuary. As captive dolphins produce a great deal of waste, this poses not only a health threat to the marine mammals but could have a significant impact on the delicate marine ecosystems nearby. The court has denied an application to appeal its ruling, however the campaign continues.
