Dolphin death at Acquario di Genova

By September 11, 2020No Comments

We have received reports that one of the female dolphins known as Nau which was held at Acquario di Genova in Italy, has died.

Nau was born at Gardaland Resort, Italy in 2001. Her mother Betty, wild-caught in Florida in 1983, is one of the last dolphins to have left the UK in the early 1990s when Flamingoland, Yorkshire closed. Both mother and calf were moved from the Gardaland facility to Acquario di Genova in 2013 as Merlin Entertainments, who owned those and other dolphins, had decided against retaining them at the facility as they had chosen to establish Gardaland as an adventure park and aquarium.

Betty, thought to have been around two years old when captured, is the last remaining of the dolphins still held in captivity from the closed UK facilities.
