Several dolphins have been transferred to Harbin Polarland, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province – the marine mammals were originally imported from Japan and moved to a holding facility before being transferred to Harbin. The facility, one of many owned by Dalian Sun Asia Tourism Holdings Co., Ltd, also exhibits beluga whales which arrived in 2014 from Russia.

Through its investigative work and research, the China Cetacean Alliance (a coalition of international animal protection and conservation organisations that includes Marine Connection), estimated that in December 2020 there were 1085 cetaceans in 84 open ocean theme parks in China.
