Marine Connection is delighted to hear more about the long-range commitment to establishing a sanctuary in Washington State where Lolita can be retired, hopefully around 9 months from now.

For the first time ever, a private company with marine mammals under human care and an animal welfare organization, create a legally binding agreement with one goal – bring the opportunity to return Lolita, the sole killer whale at Miami Seaquarium, to her home waters – with all of these efforts supported by a generous financial contribution from leading philanthropist Jim Irsay who at a press conference today said, “I believe without a doubt Lolita wants to get to free waters – don’t care what anyone says, she’s lived this long to have this opportunity.”

We agree that Lolita is a special whale, the sole survivor from all of the others captured around the same time, having overcome so much, against all odds she deserves this chance – a dream which now appears to be one step nearer reality.  Stay strong Lolita!
