Questions have been raised following sightings of a solitary beluga whale in the Puget Sound area, hundreds of miles outside its usual range. Further investigation is being carried out to help determine if the marine mammal is male or female, where it came from, which group it belongs to or why it wandered away from its family pod. Beluga whales are commonly found in many regions of Alaska and it is likely the lone whale is from the endangered group of belugas that frequent Alaska’s Cook Inlet.
The last time a beluga was seen in Puget Sound was in 1940 – fingers crossed this whale finds its way back home.
Further information about solitary beluga whales can be found within our Lone Rangers report, which can be found here
