Mass cetacean stranding off West Africa

By September 30, 2019No Comments

Last week more than 130 melon-headed whales (a member of the dolphin family) died on the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde) in a mysterious mass stranding event. Despite rescue efforts to return the animals back out to sea, the majority of the whales returned to the shore where they died.

Spanish veterinarians from the University of Las Palmas in Spain’s Canary Islands will carry out further tests on four of the dolphins over the coming days and local organization BIOS.CV has also collected samples from 50 individuals for analysis.

We will update further when information from the necropsy results become available.
