New orca calf spotted in waters near Bremer Canyon, Western Australia

Bremer orca calf_copyright Rebecca WellardCurtin University researcher Rebecca Wellard spotted the calf while conducting research surveys in the Bremer Sub-Basin with Cetacean Research WA and Killer Whales Australia.

CASA licenced drone pilot Pierce Cullen captured the drone footage of DC with the new calf’s mother, Kali who has been catalogued by Project ORCA since 2016. The last time a new calf was spotted in the Bremer sub-basin was March last year.

The deep sea canyon lies 70 kilometres off the coast of the small town of Bremer Bay, 180 kilometres east of Albany in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.
