NOAA Fisheries recently published a Federal Register notice announcing a 20-day comment period on administrative law judge, George Jordan’s recommendation that the Makah tribe in Washington state be allowed to hunt gray whales. Public comments will inform NOAA Fisheries final decision on the Makah Tribe’s waiver request, which would allow them to hunt/kill up to 20 Eastern North Pacific gray whales over 10 years. The last time the Makah legally hunted gray whales was in May 1999 and if granted permission, Makah leaders hope to hunt as soon as possible, however, there are still several steps ahead in the process.

Marine Connection are totally opposed to the judge’s recommendations for gray whales to be hunted –  it’s inhumane and cruel, causing an unacceptable amount of pain and suffering to the individual animal.  We have already submitted our comments to NOAA/NMFS via the federal register.
