Five years ago this month, Marine Connection unveiled a memorial to a male solitary sociable bottlenose dolphin named Danny. From 2018 to 2020, Danny became a familiar presence in the waters off the Cornish and Dorset coasts, captivating all who encountered him. Tragically, he was just 10 years old when his life was cut short by a vessel strike in October 2020.
Over more than six decades, we have documented at least 17 solitary sociable cetaceans in UK waters. While each animal’s story is unique, clear patterns have emerged: prolonged isolation, increasing habituation to people, attraction to vessels and harbour environments, and heightened vulnerability to human activities. Most striking of all is that vessel collisions remain the leading cause of death for these remarkable animals.
