Update on walrus in UK waters

As many will be aware, a walrus has been frequenting the coastal area around the Isles of Scilly (UK) since mid-June.  Whilst the walrus, which has been nicknamed ‘Wally’, has aroused much interest and brought enjoyment to a lot of people, his presence in St Mary’s harbour poses huge risks – not only to himself but potentially also human safely, he has also caused £££ of damage to boats, threatening livelihoods in the area.

His welfare is of course paramount, therefore it is hoped that ‘Wally’ can be encouraged to choose to move to a more secluded wild site, where he can rest sufficiently in order to continue his journey back north to his native Arctic.  Marine Connection has been following the progress of this situation and appreciate the complex difficulties faced by all involved in these unprecedented circumstances, it is however clear this situation cannot continue without humane intervention to keep Wally and everyone safe.  We have been in contact with our colleagues at BDMLR and have added our support to the joint statement.
