Humans create a considerable amount of noise in the ocean but to what degree do we understand the full impact of our activities on marine life?
Sound is the primary sense for dolphins, whales and porpoises and mixed in between the large range of frequencies used by cetaceans are the sounds introduced by humans. The primary sources of noise pollution are commercial shipping, seismic airgun exploration (for oil and gas) and naval and mapping sonars. Whilst these sounds may have no impact on humans, for marine life, they can be extremely detrimental to their welfare and survival.
