Cecil, a bottlenose dolphin who was held at Kolmården Zoo, was euthanised on 21 August 2026, aged 42.2 years.
Reports say Cecil had recently experienced an infection. While the infection itself was resolved, his condition continued to decline. He was showing signs associated with ageing and had a weakened immune system, and veterinarians ultimately decided that euthanasia was necessary. But Cecil’s story is about more than his final days. He spent over four decades in captivity, confined to an artificial environment and displayed to the public.
For us at Marine Connection, Cecil’s death is another reminder of the serious questions surrounding the keeping of dolphins for entertainment. Dolphins are highly intelligent, social, wide-ranging marine mammals — not performers or attractions.
Cecil should not simply be remembered for how long he survived in captivity. His life should prompt us to further question whether dolphins should be kept in dolphinaria at all.
