Seaspiracy is a powerful feature-length documentary that unearths the environmental impact of fishing. Launched on Netflix only last week, it’s already trending as one of its Top 10 most-watched films and programmes.

Directed and narrated by British filmmaker Ali Tabrizi, Seaspiracy highlights many of our concerns including the impact of marine plastics on dolphins and whales and fisheries bycatch globally. It also looks at the issue of sustainable fishing and ‘dolphin friendly’ labels which are aimed at consumers wanting to buy fish products that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. Fishing certification or labels cannot however 100% guarantee that the techniques used have not caused the death of dolphins, whales or other marine life in the process. Dolphins often get entangled in yellowfin tuna fisheries in the eastern Pacific Ocean and cetaceans frequently die in illegal drift nets in the South Indian Ocean.

Seaspiracy has been praised by celebrities including singer, musician and photographer Bryan Adams, who has urged his followers on social media to watch Seaspiracy and stop eating fish. Mr Adams has been a long-time advocate for dolphins and whales and supported Marine Connection’s ongoing bycatch campaign when first launched in 2003 under the strapline These Fishnets Don’t Kill Dolphins.

The Seaspiracy documentary is a truly heart-breaking but vital watch, that will change the way you look at seafood forever.
