It’s deeply disappointing that the recent UK King’s Speech, which outlines the government’s priorities, planned new laws, and the agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session, failed to meaningfully address animal welfare issues, especially at a time when public concern for the treatment and protection of animals continues to grow. Animal welfare is not a niche issue – it intersects with ethics, environmental sustainability, wildlife conservation, and the values of a compassionate society.
Many had hoped the speech would include stronger commitments on matters such as the Animals (Low Welfare Activities Abroad) Act, strengthening protections against animal cruelty, and safeguarding wildlife habitats. Instead, the absence of any substantial mention sends a discouraging message to campaigners, charities, and millions of people who believe animal welfare should remain a national priority rather than an afterthought. In a country that has often prided itself on advancing animal protection standards, silence on these issues is difficult to ignore. Many, including Marine Connection, will now be looking for reassurance that animal welfare commitments have not quietly slipped down the political agenda.
